Action Plan

Recommendations Based on our Data:

Once we gathered and analyzed our data, we sorted it into different themes. When comparing our work, we discovered that each member of our team noticed similar patterns in the data. Therefore, we came up with the recommendations based on our collective topics and project aims.

Recommendation 1:

Our first recommendation is to expand the programs into middle and high schools.  This is one of HP’s original goals, and the data we collected supports this goal. Furthermore, the frequency of the programs could occur more often. For example, one of our observations was a program that lasted for five days. This gives the students a more in-depth exposure to arts-based education, and it can often have a larger impact as it becomes a temporary routine.

Recommendation 2:

Based on our first idea, we want to recommend the school district give Hartford Performs more funding. In order to maintain and expand these vital programs, HP needs more money to meet the demand from the schools. From our research, we gathered that increased arts-based education can only benefit the students’ learning.

Recommendation 3:

Furthermore, we feel that increased communication among teaching artists, Hartford Performs, and parents will be beneficial to programming and the spread of arts-based education. For example, one of the teaching artists at the focus group recommended a best practices sheet so that the extra experienced artists can help get newer artists and programs implemented more often.

“That’s another thing I think we could offer Hartford Performs, like a best practices sort of thing. I think some of the ones that get booked multiple time and know what some of the teachers want.” -Teaching Artist 3

Additionally, the parents we talked with expressed an interest in knowing the types of arts-based education occurring in the schools. For example, one of the parents interviewed thought that Hartford Performs was in her daughter’s school, but did not think it was available to the third grade.

“I would love to know…I would like to know if her schools is one of the Hartford Public Schools that is affiliated with them.” -Parent 2

Further Considerations:

After our last meeting, we began brainstorming ideas as to how Hartford Performs can provide arts-education in a socially distant environment. We have noticed resources being posted on Hartford Perform’s Facebook page and Instagram. Additionally, some teaching artists have been posting revised versions of their programs. As social distancing continues, continuing on these platforms will be vital. Yet, it is not a viable solution for all students as many many not have access to a computer or social media.
