Through our oral history interviews, several key themes emerged that showcase the lived experiences and concerns of previous or current Hartford residents. This process was iterative, with interviews and analysis evolving to capture a deeper understanding of the community’s concerns and experiences. The guiding questions shaping our analysis included:

  • What impacts have Hartford residents faced from MIRA?
  • What would Hartford residents like to see happen with MIRA in the future?
  • What are residents’ thoughts on the Environmental Justice Fund idea?
  • What barriers prevent Hartford residents from engaging in advocacy around environmental justice issues?

We identified recurring themes such as environmental racism, the impact of the MIRA incinerator on the community, and the broader role of environmental policy and regulation. We also explored residents’ thoughts on the future of the land and its remediation, their perspectives on the Environmental Justice Fund, and the barriers they face in engaging in effective advocacy. We selected these themes because we believe they represent crucial elements of the environmental justice landscape in Hartford. Together, these themes offer insight that can inform and support meaningful remediation efforts moving forward.
