Diondra Robertson on Yessica Amparo
Subject
Yessica Amparo
Description
Diondra Robertson speaking about Yessica Amparo. Yessica Amparo is a Youth Development Specialist at Our Piece of the Pie. Her mantra speaks directly to her engagement within the community, “the youth are our future.” She believes in educating and guiding young people, and it was her students, in fact, that nominated and voted for her to be acknowledged as a Frog Hollow Hero. Her leadership at the Youth Service Corps has initiated a powerful presence as community gardens are built, trash is picked up, and information is offered throughout the neighborhood. For this line reference Diondra Robertson’s, her direct supervisor, interview recounting Yessica’s legacy.

Speaker 1 [00:00:03] So can you tell me about what heroes you're here to celebrate today?
Speaker 2 [00:00:07] Today, I'm here celebrating Yessica Amparo.
Speaker 1 [00:00:12] And how has this hero impacted you personally?
Speaker 2 [00:00:15] So I actually first we work together at Our Piece of the Pie, I'm her direct supervisor. And the impact that she does personally to me is just admiring the hard work that she does in the community, that the hard work she does with our youth every single day, she goes above and beyond for them. She literally like lives at her job, and she does not do her job as a regular nine to five. She literally will go in and out for them. Meet them where they're at. Support them for where they need and all those things. And that's one thing. Or that's like the main thing I highly admire about her, which is why she has such a huge turnout of support here with her today.
Speaker 1 [00:00:56] And this questions kind of similar. But can you share how she has impacted the Frog Hollow community?
Speaker 2 [00:01:02] The way she impacted upon how the community is part of our job is we do a lot of civic engagement service learning projects in the city of Hartford. So many times we are doing a lot of our projects in the Frog Hollow area, which is like giving back to the community, whether it's in terms of landscaping for the senior residents, gardening, helping with the community gardens in the community, or even just like the food shares we do around the community. So a lot of those things, those things do take place in the Frog Hollow community. And she's always like our number one staff whose always a part of it with the youth to make sure that those things are happening.
Speaker 1 [00:01:44] And how do you think the community can honor the legacy of her?
Speaker 2 [00:01:48] I think they're doing it now. Honestly, the whole mural aspect that they're doing, it's big for her. This is something she's been talking about all month, ever since it’s been a thing. And I think just having her face out here and literally having a physical face of her for the community to see when they're driving up and down or walking around the area, it's it's definitely an honor to see and it's definitely a blessing. She deserves it. Everything she's getting, she highly deserves it. So I think that what they are doing for her right now is great.
Speaker 1 [00:02:22] Do you have any questions for us?
Speaker 2 [00:02:25] No, I think I do like this idea like I like that you guys are doing a personal interviews and things are things for like people like myself who are here to support the heroes here for us to give, give us a voice to kind of honor them and celebrate them and kind of share their stories. So I do respect what you guys are doing so.
Speaker 1 [00:02:42] If you could just state your name.
