Representation
- Invest in diverse staff and interns that are connected to communities of color in the state
- Prioritize embedded, community-based journalists in urban areas of the state who can build relationships of trust in communities of color
- Pursue more resources to support diverse content and platforms (e.g. the Record-Journal in Central CT that has a Latino News section on their website)
- Acknowledge bias and power dynamics in reporting (“active objectivity”)
- Prioritize stories from Latinx communities that stress their assets and cultural contributions to the state
Methods of Consuming News
-
Focus on platforms that present news in shorter, digestible formats, since many do not have time to devote to long articles
-
Provide more points of interaction with the community
-
Prioritize news items for print distribution in Latinx communities in Spanish
Time & Access
- Host regular community events that listen to their concerns and questions.
- Continue to invest in Spanish language stories on the website.
- Focus on news that helps give access to power: Immigration and Educational Resources, Housing Issues, and other keys to advocacy
Effects of News on Individual/Communities
Why Representation in the Media Matters
- Prioritize stories from Latinx communities that stress their assets and cultural contributions to the state and their communities.
- Profile Latinx “changemakers” in CT to demonstrate assets and also avenues for advocacy on key issues of interest.
