Demographics

With a 2020 population of 121,203, Hartford is the 4th largest city in Connecticut. Hartford is currently declining at a rate of -0.37% annually and its population has decreased by -2.86% since the most recent census, which recorded a population of 124,775 in 2010. Hartford reached it’s highest population of 177,397 in 1950. Hartford has a population density of 6,974 people per square mile. By the time of the 1960 census, the city’s population was dropping, as more people were moving to suburban areas surrounding the city. This trend continued until the census of 1990. The population peaked in 1950 with over 177,000 residents. Today, however, that number has dropped significantly. Recent estimates show that the population has again dropped over 1% since the last census taken in 2010. Socio-economic disparities between the city and its suburbs, high poverty rates and the city’s financial problems are a contributing factor to the reduced population. As displayed in the image above, the Behind the Rocks and South are similarly following the population decline since 2010-2020. The population density of the two neighborhoods fall at about an average of their neighboring communities in Hartford. In looking below at the charts of population, both neighborhoods have predominantly Hispanic residents with black and white residents are trailing equally.
