In the Liberal Arts Action Lab, Hartford community partners propose semester-long research projects to pursue in collaboration with student and faculty teams from Trinity and Capital Community College. Students apply to join project teams and enroll in two courses to learn participatory research skills and digital tools that enable collaboration with partner organizations. The Action Lab’s director is the lead instructor for these courses, but each project team also works with a Faculty Fellow who provides additional substantive or methodological expertise.
Faculty Fellows receive a $1,000 stipend to: (1) serve as a resource for the director in-class preparation, (2) participate in a pre-semester planning meeting, and (3) join a monthly 1-hour meeting with their project team from September-December 2021.
In Fall 2021, the Action Lab will host the following four projects. The Faculty Fellow for each project must be available to meet monthly with their project team during the times listed below.
- Community Ownership on Tuesdays from 1:30-4:10 pm: LISC proposes an analysis of who owns non-owner occupied homes in the North End, to identify recommendations that improve conditions for renters and wealth-building for owner-occupants and community-based investor-owners.
- Frog Hollow Storytelling on Wednesdays from 1:15-3:55 pm: SINA proposes to document the history of Frog Hollow through the voices of its residents, to recognize and build upon community vitality.
- Neighborhood Investment on Wednesdays from 6:30-9:00 pm: The Southwest and Behind the Rocks NRZ proposes an examination of the return on investment from community revitalization projects, in order to advocate for further investment.
- Energy Efficiency Project on Thursdays from 1:30-4:10 pm: Sierra Club CT proposes research to understand Hartford residents’ energy burden (the proportion of income spent on energy bills) and identify programs to reduce costs through energy efficiency.
